AUP Student Media (ASM)

Spring 2010: New Challenges and New Perspectives

A Statement from Caitlin Barretto, ASM Board Manager

Our goal is to have every voice heard on campus. A student body as diverse as AUP's deserves to have a platform on which every opinion can be heard- this is the role of AUP Student Media, ASM. Whether it be through an academic paper written for a journal, a radio show playing a different culture's music, or an opinion article written for The Planet, every student's view should be voiced. ASM strives to represent the identity of our university, while reminding others that AUP is more than just a melange of cultured individuals, but it is also a mecca of amazing scholars who long to express themselves through the art of media.

It is because of ASM's continued promotion of student- created media, that encourages me to advocate for a thriving ASM. This semester I am stressing advertising for ASM. I feel that only a small population at AUP truly knows about ASM; I want to change that. I want to make ASM a key facet at AUP; something that AUP students will be proud of;something that they would want to share with outsiders. My plans for the semester are therefore to create as many opportunities as possible for AUP students to get involved with ASM via advertising, keeping the student body constantly updated on ASM events, deadlines, shows, and more. I want students to know what is happening and when in ASM.

I urge all students to participate in ASM. Even if you do not think of yourself as a writer, submit a paper you have written for a class; students often forget about the essays they have written for previous classes, why not see if it is worth submitting? It is so easy! Or if writing truly is not your talent, why not talk about your opinions on a radio show for an hour or two? Play your own music and discuss your own topics at free will. Even creating a video or a news program for us allows you to express yourself. ASM offers so many different ways to display students' beliefs, we just need to be proactive!

This is my and ASM's mission for the semester. We hope all students will consider communicating their unique visions.

Sincerely,

Caitlin Barretto, ASM Board Manager
