How can I access my AUP e-mail using an IMAP client?

You can access your AUP e-mail using an application ("client") that supports the secure IMAP protocol ("IMAPS" or "IMAP over SSL"). Examples of secure IMAP-capable clients include Microsoft Outlook, Windows Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird and Apple Mail.

Connection details

This is the basic information you need in order to configure an IMAP client:

  • Incoming mail server: imap.aup.fr
  • Incoming e-mail server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) using the default port 993
  • Outgoing mail server: depends on your Internet Service Provider. It generally takes the form smtp.YourServiceProvider.fr (for example, for Neuf Télécom: smtp.neuf.fr; for Free: smtp.free.fr). If you are on campus (connected to the AUP network) you can simply put mx in this field.
  • Username and password: your NetID account name and password.

Subscribing to folders

Some e-mail clients will only display your Inbox folder by default. To view your other folders, you will need to "subscribe" to them. Please consult your e-mail client's documentation to find out how to do this. For example: instructions for Thunderbird; instructions for Microsoft Outlook.

Configuring Microsoft Outlook for secure IMAP

  1. Click on Start -> Programs -> Microsoft Office -> Microsoft Outlook 2003 or Start -> Programs -> Outlook Express. If you are using the program for the first time it will start a wizard to configure your email account.
  2. Keep the default option "Add a new e-mail account" and click Next.
  3. Select IMAP as the e-mail account type.
  4. Click Next and enter the appropriate information. Your Name: Your full name as it should appear in the "From" section of your e-mail messages. Email Address: This is your "From" email address. Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) don't allow you to use a "From" address that isn't one of their own. Therefore, if you are unable to send e-mail with your AUP address in this field, enter a personal address provided by your ISP. Note that messages you send will appear to be coming from the address you specify in this field. User Name: This is your NetID. Password: This is the password for your NetID account. Incoming mail server (IMAP): This is the AUP mail server that delivers your incoming messages. Outgoing mail server (SMTP): This is server that will send your outgoing messages. If you are connecting from off campus, enter your ISP's SMTP address (e.g. smtp.free.fr or smtp.neuf.fr). If you are connecting from on campus, simply enter mx.
  5. Click the More Settings button and select the Advanced tab. Make sure "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)" is checked, and click OK.
  6. Click Finish.
  7. You will see a pop-up message indicating that the server you are trying to connect to is using a certificate. Click Yes to accept this certificate.
  8. Click on the Inbox under imap.aup.fr and Outlook will connect to the server to start retrieving your messages.
  9. Right click imap.aup.fr and click IMAP Folders.
  10. Clear the check box "When displaying hierarchy in Outlook, show only subscribed folders." This way, you will see all your e-mail folders as well as your Calendar, Contacts, etc.
