Advising for Transfer Students

Welcome transfer student! Our advisors look forward to working with you to help make your AUP journey an exciting intellectual and personal discovery. Depending on the number of credits you will be transferring, you will have an accelerated learning curve compared to other entering students. Our goal via the next steps is to help you best prepare for your arrival so that you can hit the ground running! Let’s begin by making sure you understand how transfer credits work.

Once you have read this entire section, which is required before you are able to register, be sure to click on the acknowledgement button at the end of the section. This will permit you to move on to register for classes.

How transfer credits work

The American University of Paris will transfer credits from regionally or nationally accredited universities. We have a vast experience dealing with international institutions.

  • Transfer students receive “credit” for previously completed university courses where a grade of “C” or higher was earned
  • Only credits, not grades transfer to AUP
  • Students may transfer a maximum of 64 credits from all sources (i.e., advanced credit awards and transfer credits)
  • Students must complete 50% of their upper-level major requirements at AUP
  • Some majors have more specific rules in regard to transfer credits
  • Students may apply up to 8 credits of transfer work to a minor
  • The last 16 degree credits must be completed in residency at AUP

Working with your advisor

You will be assigned to a dedicated transfer advisor during your first semester at AUP in order to provide specialized support during this transition and to ensure that all your credits have been correctly transferred. Upon completion of your first semester, you will be reassigned to an advisor who matches your academic interests and needs. You will move into coursework tied to your previous academic standing and based on consultations with your advisor.

Completing the transfer credit evaluation online form

Your advisor will need to gather some information from you in order to finalize your transfer credits and tailor your course equivalencies based on your academic profile.   To help our advisors complete this work, we need to gather some information from you on the school(s) you’ve attended, the number of credits you think you’ll be transferring as well as your desired major(s) and minor(s) at AUP.

We will be asking you to complete a transfer credit evaluation form. Please refer to the Advising section of the online Checklist to complete this form. It must be completed as soon as possible after you have confirmed your attendance, and is necessary to complete before you make an appointment to speak with your advisor and register for courses.

In addition, after reviewing the majors and minors available at AUP, it will be helpful to provide your major and minor preference by completing the online form on the Advising section of the Checklist.

The transferability of credit toward your intended major at AUP is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Indicating your intended major in your AUP application allows the registrar’s office to begin evaluating equivalencies prior to your arrival to campus. You’re also encouraged to familiarize yourself with requirements within your intended major, including the need for prerequisites in upper-division courses. As a transfer student, you must complete at least fifty percent of your upper-level major requirements at AUP. You may apply up to eight transfer credits toward a minor.
