First-Year Courses

Welcome, Class of 2021!

This brochure was made for you by the chairs of the academic departments. We wish you a very warm welcome and hope that you will enjoy your time with us as much as we and our colleagues enjoy teaching you.

Below you find a list of first-year friendly courses. Take your time to acquaint yourself with the wide range of offerings you can choose from. The list itself is in alphabetical order, arranged according to the course codes of the different disciplines. To help you find your way, here a few more suggestions.

Explore Paris

Many of our classes encourage students to visit interesting places in and outside Paris, and you can join study trips even if you are not taking the class in question.

If you are interested in a more thorough introduction to Paris, you should try out the following:

  • AH/UR 2000 Paris through its Architecture (taught in English)
  • AH 1003 Intro to Art through Paris Museums

For Creatives

AUP fosters creative production and appreciation of the arts, both in individual courses and in formal degrees, which we offer in Art History (major or minor), Fine Arts (major or minor), Comparative Literature (major or minor), Creative Writing (minor), Film (FM, major or minor), Journalism (major or minor), Literary Studies and the Creative Arts (a major in which you can explore different creative art forms together), and Theater and Performance (minor).

This semester, you can take courses in Fine arts (AR 1010, 1015, 1020, 1040, 1061, 2032, 2091), Creative Writing (CL 2100), Public Speaking (CM 2001), Web Authoring (CS/CM 1005), Journalism practicum (CM 1080-1082), Digital Toolkit (CM 1500), Video Production (CM/FM 1019).

Courses for a degree

First-year students are encouraged to use their first year to explore different disciplines, but some of you may have already chosen a major or minor. Below we’ve provided a list of possible courses for each degree. Information about General Education requirements fulfilled by a course is given in the description.

By the way, departments can serve you best if they know you are studying for a degree they offer. For this, you must declare your major or minor. This is easily done online, and you can always change your mind and undeclare a degree if it turns out that this is not quite what you want.
