The George and Irina Schaeffer Research Scholarship

The George and Irina Schaeffer Research Scholarship is a prestigious scholarship awarded by the George and Irina Schaeffer Center for the Study of Genocide, Human Rights and Conflict Prevention at The American University of Paris. This scholarship is awarded annually and designed to support one or two AUP students entering their junior or senior year who demonstrate(s) excellence in scholarship, are in financial need, and interested in pursuing advanced research related to the Center’s mission. Awards are intended to support tuition or other university expenses. Students are expected to continue their scholarship on genocide, mass violence, human rights, and/or the prevention of violence at AUP and to participate in the intellectual life of the Center. Scholarships are typically between 7,500 and 15,000 Euros. Application deadline is May 20 2024.

 

Description of the Scholarship

The Center is particularly interested in applications that:

  • Further the Center’s mission (study of genocide, mass violence, human rights, peace, conflict resolution, the origins of racism, hatred and discrimination).
  • Make an impact on the public’s understanding of the causes and consequences of genocide and other forms of mass violence.
  • Include the use of the Visual History Archive or the Fortunoff Archive.

 

Qualifications of Applicants

Applicants must:

  • Be entering their junior and/or senior year
  • Be currently enrolled at The American University of Paris
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Demonstrate financial need. Have a strong academic record
  • Demonstrate interest in genocide studies or related field

  • A completed application form.
  • A current resume or CV.
  • One confidential reference letter from a current or former faculty member who is familiar with the applicant's academic work and research potential sent directly to schaeffercenterataup.edu.
  • The current academic transcript of the applicant.
