How does transportation reimbursement work?

Under French law since 2009, all private or public employers have an obligation to cover at minimum 50% of employee travel expenses for their daily commute to and from home and work using public transportation or bike rental.

All employees are entitled to this benefit, regardless of the distance commuted. This even applies to part-time contracts (for those working less than half-time, the mandatory reimbursement is prorated).

Only monthly or yearly travel passes are reimbursed (individual tickets are not reimbursed).

Navigo pass subscriptions: Weekly, monthly & annual

As per the collective agreement negotiated by AUP, the University has taken this a step further and is committed to reimbursing full-time employees 75% of the cost of a weekly, monthly or annual Navigo Pass subscription. Beneficiaries will find this reimbursement on their paycheck under the reference “IND TRANSP REG PARIS.”

Claim for bicycle indemnity

Employers can choose to reimburse employees for the cost of travelling to work by bicycle, and AUP supports this initiative which contributes to both work-life balance and zero-carbon transport solutions. The reimbursement rate is €0.25 per kilometer, with an annual maximum of €400. The transportation in this category includes personal, electric, and public bikes, as well as motorized and electric scooters.

Eligibility is determined by the commuter’s place of residence. After consultation with the Comité d’entreprise, AUP has decided that employees:

  • who live within Paris (postcode 75) may be reimbursed EITHER for their Navigo pass OR for the bicycle indemnity;
  • and that those who live outside of Paris may cumulate the bicycle indemnity AND public transport subscription (Navigo Pass) reimbursement ONLY IF they cycle to the nearest public transport terminal.

To benefit, please fill out the form attached below each month. Include the kilometers biked along with a mapped itinerary to justify the number of kilometers you are claiming. The indemnity will be paid with your salary and is not subject to social charges or income tax.

Reduced-price railway tickets

Once per year, all employees in France are entitled to a 25% reduction on a round-trip train ticket to a destination located between 100 and 200 kilometers from their hometown. Known locally as a Billet de Congé annuel, this annual leave ticket only applies to travel within France.

Important Information

We recommend that employees check with the SNCF whether this reduction is the best for their particular travel plans, as other, potentially more advantageous reductions exist.

Additional Documentation

To obtain this reduction, a dedicated form to be obtained from the SNCF ticket office must be filled out by Human Resources and returned to the SNCF office when purchasing the ticket.
